Dave Wakeling, Lead Vocals – The English Beat
January 2009

On January 5th, 2009 I had the chance to interview Dave Wakeling of The English Beat and General Public. It was amazing to be able to chat with someone so nice, passionate and interesting. The interview lasted for about 75 minutes and was broken into seven segments below.

Segment 1 – 12:30
Dave and I discuss the changes in the music industry, how it has affected creativity. We also spoke about boutique labels in the 80s like IRS as well as how different the music industry is now. Dave Wakeling love’s Philadelphia because it is a music town. General Public toured with Hall & Oates. Dave also answers the question, “Was The Beat’s music too British for mainstream America?” We also discussed the differences between Terrestrial and Satellite Radio.
Listen to Segment 1

Segment 2 – 13:30
In this segment we go from Terrestrial vs. Satellite to how the innovators are at the front. Dave also revealed info about new Beat music and how he would like to distribute it. Dave shared some very interesting things like how he used to be uncomfortable when Beat fans would come up to him and tell him what his songs meant to them. Also find out about one of Dave’s music mantras “Only Connect – Forget the rest.” Dave shares some info about how his lifestyle has changed as he is older now and what sacrifices he’s made to do music full time. A very politically active individual who follows politics the way most Americans follow football.
Listen to Segment 2

Segment 3 – 10:55
This segment is more sociopolitical which isn’t surprising because The Beat’s lyrics are very sociopolitical. Dave shared about him being the 1st Wakeling to not fight in a war and how destructive bad energy is. He also discussed how Americans are very nice and have a bad rap b/c of American policies world wide and that religion makes no sense, b/c it is your duty to everyone else as a human being to behave.
Listen to Segment 3

Segment 4 – 13:21
Here Dave talks about the Future for The Beat and hitting the road this spring with Bad Manners. Dave also shares his love for vinyl and how music has a physiological affect on us and that CD’s don’t offer the complete satisfaction that vinyl does. The Beat will be in Philly Feb. 3rd, 2009 at The World Café. I shared two of my Beat experiences with him in the 80s including seeing them headline The Beat, Bow Wow Wow, REM tour in 1983. Dave talks about their live shows and how they don’t go too deep because they have to build up live momentum. Find out what lyric Elvis Costello said was his favourite lyric from 1983. Dave also talked about playing The US festival and the Hawaiin Shirt that he wore.
Listen to Segment 4

Segment 5 – 8:09
Dave discusses being ready for their winter/spring tour 2009 and why he is the only Original member touring with The English Beat currently. Dave also shares how he found the musicians that he plays with now and how songwriting his songwriting is different now versus in the past.
Listen to Segment 5

Segment 6 – 10:42
Dave talks about some of his new songs including one that was triggered by civilians mixed with the feelings of loss he suffered when he lost his mother. Dave also lets us know about the band’s recording plans after the tour and when we should see some new music from them. Dave is also excited to jam with the guys again and is looking forward to soundchecks. He also shares more about his songwriting being less British and more global and getting on the road with Bad Manners.
Listen to Segment 6

Segment 7 – 10:00
In the final segment of my interview with Dave Wakeling, he talks about a 2 Tone 30 year reunion tour and some of the other 2 Tone bands like Selecter, The Bodysnatchers and others. Dave also tells us about The Beat Girl and whether she is REAL or not and how the Musicial note earring came to be. He answers my LAST question and then he throws out some great quotes and talks about The Beat and Bad Manners in Philly, Feb. 3rd at the World Café.
